"This is an unbelievable wine that will only grow in stature over the coming years. As for comparison to previous vintages? The best until now was the 2018, but the 2021 is tighter, more focused and even, if you can believe it, longer. My heart (and money) is here, by a whisker. Characters of matchstick are evident and in keeping with recent vintages 2017-2021. An intensely aromatic wine backed by powerful fruit. Complex characters of subterranean smoky peat emerge, with an explosion of white peach and nectarine on the finish. Penetratingly long, yet fine, with all the hallmarks of Giaconda chardonnay that you have come to expect.

The 2021 Estate Vineyard Chardonnay follows on directly from the 2019, as no 2020 vintage was made due to bushfires. The winemaking remains consistent with previous vintages: hand-picked, lightly crushed, then basket pressed, fermented wild in oak in the gravity-flow cellar, matured for 18+ months in French oak (30% new), with 100% malolactic fermentation. The 2021 is backward and flinty at this stage, with a staggering flow of flavor across the palate. It has penetrating characters of saffron, yellow peach, preserved citrus, red apple skins, brine, crushed shells and Indian root spice. I acknowledge that I have a blind spot for high-quality oak. It is present here, but it is seamlessly integrated into and matched by the potency of the fruit presence. This is an unbelievable wine that will only grow in stature over the coming years. As for comparison to previous vintages? The best until now was the 2018, but the 2021 is tighter, more focused and even, if you can believe it, longer. My heart (and money) is here, by a whisker. What a phenomenal wine.

Winery tasting note - Golden lime green in colour. An intensely focused bouquet of jasmine flower, white nectarines and grapefruit, galangal and a waft of peaty, toasty oak making its presence in a discrete manner. As it opens, flint and matchstick add another layer to this incredible aromatic show. Multi-layered white fruits power the palate, while spice notes compliment the tingling impact of minerality on the finish. Rapier sharp in its attack and precision; piercing long, clean and steely. The depth of palate and textural roundness is considerable. The finish is tensile, savoury and immensely satisfying.

The art of gentle, slow seduction. Meyer lemon rind, then complex matchstick sulphides waft in and out as mineral-charged peach and nectarine notes emerge to dominate the aroma. Oak sits back; supporting and coaxing the textural white stone fruits to roll on the palate. Mineral laden acidity then draws citrus infused flavours longer on the palate. This year the fruit asserts itself whilst the artefact shadows - supporting but not interrupting the fruits pristine performance. Another high-end release of Giaconda chardonnay.

Straw gold; exhibits intense characters of white peach, hazelnut, matchstick, lime blossom and subtle notes of tangelo rind. A powerful impact on the palate with endless depth as you peel back the layers; funky reduction then a creamy textured element followed by mineral notes of wet river pebbles. Multilayered, fresh and elegant with tremendous persistence that finishes with strong mineral aromatics. Golden hue with a bright green rim. A complex signature of reductive characters; meal, the 'good dirt' and matchstick complimenting hazelnut and peach notes infused with lemon zest and ginger. The palate is taut and compact with a strong mineral edge drawing out white peach fruit. A powerful and assertive example of chardonnay that combines multifaceted flavours with latent power. The finish is compelling: minerality and acidity combine to a rapier sharp finish.

There are two reasons you can struggle to write a tasting note. Sometimes you just can't find anything to say. Then there are times when words cannot do justice to what it is you are describing. A failing of the writer, not the wine. This wine is definitely the later scenario. For some, the 2010 Chardonnay reached a summit that Rick had long been climbing. He's found a new mountain, higher than the last, and successfully climbed that also. Finesse with bright acidity; complex notes of hazelnut, funky, matchstick, tightly wound stone fruit and intense mineral notes push the wine to an extraordinary length on the palate. Certainly among the greatest ever Giaconda Chardonnays. Simply jaw dropping, the tensile length on the palate is a reflection of superb vintage conditions. Destined to live for a long time!

Wine is not just for drinking. Equally important is the joy its aromas can bring. The 2014 Estate Chardonnay is such a wine, you can just sit back and immerse yourself in the aromatic complexity of minerality, matchstick, wood spice and funky fruit. But that would be an injustice. This wine really needs time, that is time to allow its multiple veils to slowly reveal. Matchstick, complex funky sulphides, white stone fruit, exotic spices, grilled hazelnuts and then again another layer of fruit. Textured but not heavy. This wine shows more each time you return to it. To smell is to taste. A complex and finely crafted wine, augmented by carefully incorporated oak and perfectly judged acidity.

Vibrant green and gold in colour. The aroma of gun flint and 'old Giaconda dirt', the good type that adds further dimension to white stone fruit aromas that are spiced with citrus rind aromatics. Brings back memories of the early 90s wines with the taste of granite and quartz bringing a minerality to the end palate. A sweet smell of complex decomposed granitic humus and clay provides a distinctive stamp to this Estate Vineyard wine.

A deep hue of green and gold defines this wine - one of intensity and depth. Aromas of peach, oatmeal, subtle notes of charred peat, seasoned by complex lees derived characters ('the good dirt') with flashes of matchstick. The palate has intense fruit power in the spectrum of nectarine to peach stone fruits is deftly laced with complex seasoned oak that adds a zesty orange rind and ginger component to the wine. Powerful and long, the 2012 will be more immediately appealing given the sheer unadulterated intensity of the wine. This wine is an essay in depth and balance.

Wine of the year - Jeremy Oliver, The Australian Wine Annual 2013.

Once again, recent tastings have have exceeded my expectations. A signature nose of matchstick and meal with powerful underlying minerality. Like 2010 this wine reflects many characters from some of best vintages of the 90s. A very powerful palate, tight and racy. Wonderfully subtle fruit, well integrated with complex secondary characters, fine acidity and great length. This wine will develop into a real classic, quite in the style of traditional Burgundy. This wine will have great longevity - especially under screwcap closure.

Best Chardonnay - James Halliday, Australian Wine Companion 2014.

Wine of the year and best Chardonnay - Nick Stock, Good Wine Guide 2013.

Wine of the year - Phillip Rich, Financial Review Magazine, 30 November 2012.

Our first Chardonnay completely fermented and aged underground in the cave. This means a slower and more even ageing process, combined with the cooler season this has resulted in a wine with very long ageing potential. The wine has a signature nose of matchstick and meal with powerful underlying minerality. While similar in style to 2008 this wine is a little more racy with slightly less oak showing at this stage. The palate is highly refined and harks back to some of our best vintages from the 90s. The fruit is powerful but very well integrated with the other components.

The nose has typical Giaconda characters with hints of meal; matchstick and minerals with overtones of toasty oak. The 2008 while slightly more refined and elegant (due to earlier picking in cooler conditions) combines all the best aspects of the 04; 05 and 06 vintages and still maintains the length and power on the finish which is a Giaconda hallmark. This could be the most refined Giaconda Chardonnay for years, but still embodies the usual drive and power.

Estate Vineyard Roussanne

Estate Vineyard Roussanne

2022

Like Lazarus, the Roussanne is back. A new site, planted on the Giaconda amphitheatre block! And it's better than ever before. Think back to our 'Aeolia' wine and then dial up the minerality with sheer depth and intensity of exotic fruits. It combines opulence of flavour with a salivating backbone of acidity and wet stone. This is how Roussanne should taste and will be one for the ages.

"The 2022 Estate Vineyard Roussanne marks the inaugural release of this cuvee, and it is evident upon tasting the wine that it is a worthy addition to the Estate Vineyard range. Somewhat golden in the glass and leading with an incredibly spicy nose, there is white pear and gum leaves, a hint of the "Giaconda campfire" character (big fan of it), cracked fennel seeds and green apple skins, with white pepper and layers of brine. On the palate, the true nature of Roussanne is revealed; it is waxy and wide, texturally plump and a little chewy, with layered phenolics and lashings of flavor. The acidity is tight and laces the finish into a tight spear of tension and complexity. This is a brilliant wine, one of the very best Roussannes that Australia has to offer the world of wine."Erin Larkin, The Wine Advocate

Dark red to coal black in colour. Notes of damp forest floor combine with a zephyr of savoury meats and campfire smoke, with raspberry and star anise notes lifted by the whole-bunch component. Round and rich with a satisfying fruit-laden palate of wild berries coming to the fore. The tannins are powder-fine and convey red fruits with a twist of spiced vanilla oak, long on the palate. Evocative and immensely complex, this finishes with a strong mineral and graphite impact. A wine that is destined to have a long future.

Exceptionally complex, dark and brooding. Black plum and wild berry fruits are complimented by graphite, undergrowth, smoked meats and elegant floral notes. The palate is plush followed with a crescendo of tannins that whisk the wine on a long journey over the palate. Here stands the iron fist in a velvet glove. Savoury tannins build on a long, spicy and complete mouthful of flavours. Despite the power and full throttle fruit, this wine retains an elegance and nobility often talked about though rarely seen. One of the most complete and satisfying Estate Vineyard wines released to date.

Estate Vineyard Shiraz

2019 2018 2017 2016 2015 2014 2013 2012 2011 2010 2009

A beautifully elevated bouquet of satsuma plums, violets, briar, black pepper and wood spice overlays the dark recess of earthy sous-bois, coal dust and graphite. The palate is round and rolling with wild berry fruits, exotic spices and perfectly framed by silky fine grain tannins. The oak is a subtle bystander, hiding in the shadows. This is a very clear reminder of just how complex and aromatic shiraz can be when grown under the right conditions.

Lifted, enticing and highly satisfying. A genial welcoming impact of lifted red to darker fruits laced with notes of clove, musk, and baked beetroot, underscored by a beguiling graphite minerality. A generous, rich and rounded palate. This has volume, showing seductive red plum fruit with a spicy edge underpinned by moreish powder fine tannins, voluptuous and silky on one level, savoury and mineral on another.

Estate Vineyard Shiraz

2019 2018 2017 2016 2015 2014 2013 2012 2011 2010 2009

After 2012 and 2014, this takes our Estate Shiraz to a new level. As the vineyard matures this fruit is delivering greater depth and power. Irresistible already, this Estate Shiraz leaves no question unanswered as to its heritage. Briar, a touch of dill, black pepper, cinnamon, cardamom, wood spice and dry twigs are working their magic here. A most enticing structure; taut, fine tannins push ripe plum fruit, whilst bright acidity enlivens the fruit, adding freshness and vitality. The palate is silky and pure with fruit and oak tannins supporting but not stealing the show.

Estate Vineyard Shiraz

2019 2018 2017 2016 2015 2014 2013 2012 2011 2010 2009

Coal black with magenta at the rim; complex aromatics swirling in and out, making it devilishly hard to do justice to with words. Initially the floral and heady notes of fresh earth, pepper, ripe dark plums, wood smoke and spice show: then dark and moody notes of stems, briar, black olives and vegetable extract emerge. One minute it's flighty like a violin, the next deep, mellow and brooding like a cello. The notes that play on the bouquet follow on the palate. Powerful dark plum fruit, spiced and savoury, is drawn by finely tuned tannins and acidity. This wine manages to combine depth and complexity whilst delivering a gentle footprint.

Intense colour of dark magenta. Lifted floral notes compete with black cherries and red plum fruits. Graphite adds much to the equation here. The palate is long, racy and savoury with an oak compliment adding spice and lovely fine grain tannins. An excellent follow on from the 2012 vintage with an overlay of sweet undergrowth and dark meaty characters. A powerful wine that will certainly evolve given time in the cellar.

Deep magenta hue pushes out to the rim. Hints of dewy rose garden and subtle briar compete with charcuterie, smoked peat and black fruits. Hints of freshly turned sods of earth and black pepper and cinnamon complete the picture; light on its feet with an abundance of ripe but not sweet black fruit handsomely restrained by fine savoury tannins that keep the wine focused. A spicy mineral purity creates a fresh finish. A wine of latent power in which refinement and finesse are the hallmarks.

A melange of red fruits with aspects of Côte-Rôtie briar and earth characters. Pepper and spice combine with a highly aromatic bouquet to give a lifted and expressive nose. The palate is fine, taut and concentrated with hints of savoury oak and dried herbs. A highly expressive nose of violets and graphite, with a wild briar character. This is the first Giaconda Shiraz with a small Viognier component - which adds an interesting extra dimension. It has an elegant structure but still retains its latent power. An ethereal palate and refined tannins. Only the second release of the Estate Shiraz, it is showing great promise and has developed outstanding depth while still holding great refinement.

The nose is wild; brambles and game with violet undertones. Concentrated lush mouth filling palate. Hints of roasted coffee. This powerful wine finishes with assertive tannins. Very much in the Rhone style. This is the first release from our Estate Vineyard amphitheatre block. After several small crops in previous years we now feel the vineyard is producing top quality fruit and can produce a stand alone wine.

"This new shiraz wine represents an evolution in our wine making for this variety. This is a combination of wine matured in new and older small French oak, large 1600 LT French oak casks and long maceration on skins (10 months) in Spanish terracotta amphorae. This brings much more complexity and, especially, more depth and tannin from the long maceration."Rick Kinzbrunner, Winemaker

Beechworth Shiraz

2022 2021

There is a theme running through the wine releases from this much anticipated 2021 vintage – power, complexity and refinement. The shiraz shows a superb tannin profile that has put more grunt in the engine and strengthened the chassis for greater endurance. Briar and undergrowth, Chinese five spice, roasted beetroot and raspberry licorice. Richly fruited and exotically spiced with a dynamic tannin structure that will age gracefully. A veritable iron fist in a velvet glove.

Warner Vineyard Shiraz

2019 2018 2016 2015 2013 2012 2011 2010 2008

A strong red to purplish hue. Undergrowth, briar, dark raspberry and chocolate, paprika with a sweet overlay of cinnamon and star anise. An immensely appealing bouquet, indicative of a long slow ripening where the fruit was not rushed to maturity. The palate is a mirror of the bouquet; suave and sophisticated, round and rolling, spicy and vibrant. A tea leaf and twig structure adds to red fruits with acidity light and fresh. A wine of great depth yet full of subtle notes that shine long on the palate.

Very dense in colour; an incredible nose of exotic spices, the full spectrum of red and dark berry fruits, bramble and stems, smoked meats, liquorice, cinnamon and cedar. The palate is rich and lush, flush with fruit and a beautifully fine tannin structure which cascades with spicy oak notes framing the overall finish. Elegant and polished with savoury red fruits dominating the palate making for a devilishly complex and highly aromatic composition. Almost too complex to describe at this stage this vintage certainly sits at the very top of all recent Warner Vineyard releases.

The palate is a mirror image of the bouquet, showing purity, depth and harmony between the elements of fruit, tannin, oak and acidity. Fine savoury tannins underpin the racy spiced plum fruit. Compelling and remarkably perfumed, here is the dance of seven veils. Feminine and highly aromatic on first impression. As each layer is peeled away, the definitive elements of Shiraz are slowly revealed. Aromatic notes of briar, rose petals and violets dampened by the earthy morning dew, give way to earth, wood spice, black pepper, aniseed, graphite, clove and cinnamon. The palate is lively and spicy with red to black fruits, crunchy acid backed by a frame of fine powdery tannin. Gloriously long and harmonious: with oak totally submissive to the dominant fruit. Wild and racy. Warner Vineyard at its best.

Impressive depth of colour. Lashes of black berries and vanilla pod with earth notes bringing another twist to the bouquet. There's chocolate and orange peel, cinnamon and sage too; a fruit laden palate with gobs of delicious blackberries nicely seasoned  by fine cedary tannins finished off with a twist of cracked black pepper. A much bigger and bolder style than the 2011 but with sufficient poise and structure to show why granite soils are the perfect fit for Shiraz. A savoury mineral flourish at the end makes the wine moreish.

The nose is profoundly deep with Scents of herb, red fruits and coffee. A firm and more refined, tightly structured palate reflecting a cooler vintage. Exotic Rhone like characters of wild herbs are developing as a counterpoint to the evident dark fruit. This continues the traditional Warner vineyard style and should offer good ageing potential.

Magenta dye and blood red. Both red and black fruits play a part here; high toned, spicy notes jostle with a fragrant oak lift, balanced by roasted beetroot, blood plums; simply seductive on the palate, rounded, spicy, elegant and yet so powerful. The tannins are a masterclass in perfection, present yet discretely playing in the background whilst the fruit stands front of stage. A wine that is truly complete. Nevertheless patience will be rewarded as this wine transforms from youthful exuberance into a sublime, sophisticated expression of site and maker. This wine continues the phoenix like resurgence of pinot noir here at Giaconda - new clones, new plantings and greater understanding of how to coax the very best out of this delightful and beguiling variety.

Combine red fruits of cherry and raspberry with subtle whole-bunch notes and the fresh morning perfume of damp rose petals, it's an orchestra of aromas and flavours. Clean and lingering on the palate, yet round and textural whilst exhibiting a light frame supported by fine savoury tannins. An essay in controlled power, complexity and authenticity – one of the best expressions of pinot we have achieved at Giaconda so far, comparable to some of the greats from '89, 92 and 95.

It has elements reminiscent of '89 and '92 with additional layers of complexity. Beechworth Nebbiolo

Cranberry red in colour; earthy and noble with a delightful aroma of sweet tar mingling with a flourish of dewy rose garden. As it opens up, old polished leather notes appear and augment the bright red cherry fruit. Supple and fruitful on the palate; packed with gobs of spiced red berry fruit dusted with a moreish layer of fine savoury tannins enabling a palate with both focus and length. It is fair to say this really nails the nomenclature of nebbiolo - rose petal and tar. This wine reeks of complexity, balance and nobility. Its sheer class and poise are obvious from the very first tasting. It certainly breaks new ground for nebbiolo.

It would be fair to say that this is the very best release of Giaconda Nebbiolo. It is an essay in how Nebbiolo is ideally grown at altitude to ensure varietal authenticity and depth of flavour. It opens with damp dewy roses, hints of sandalwood, a whiff of tar, then red fruits, freshly damp forest floor and well-worn polished leather notes. The palate is tensile with an army of fine tannins carrying the fresh red fruits long on the palate. Its charm is in the abundancy of fruit; its strength in its athletic, finely tuned tannin structure complemented by well integrated acidity. Intense and long, powerful yet elegant. The bar has been raised.

Magenta to blood red in colour. Earthy with lingering notes of rose petals, black cherry, cold tea and twigs. Cool on the palate with substantial deep concentrated black fruits. The palate is supple, full and yet it dances lightly on its toes. The tannin structure is long and fine. What impresses most is its undefinable character - simply it tastes vinous, serious and sophisticated. Combining fruit depth with beautifully crafted tannins. This wine culminates in a long, savoury and hedonistic flourish. A wine to cellar rather than rush headlong into!

In typical Nebbiolo fashion this wine takes time to open and to reveal its true colours; a vibrant robe, not too dark and with a typical brick hue around the edges. The nose blossoms with lots of tar and exotic spice but still shows those intriguing hints of rose petal. The palate is extremely complex, a melange of delicacy and great power at the same time. Ethereal yet mouth filling, it has a barely hidden richness with a rather more obvious long drawn-out tannic finish and great acidity. Decanting is recommended.

The palate is rich and silky with an enigmatic quality that almost assaults the palate while still retaining an element of latent restrained power. The tannins are plush but still very fine, which in combination with good acidity carries the palate to a very long finish.

Possessing a medium ruby colour, the rose petal character on the nose is pretty profound, with quite a lot of tar and some funky game notes. Layers of aromas include rose hip tea, tobacco, some loam, a bit of dark chocolate and a touch of anise amongst the stewed Ceylon tea leaves. The medium to full body, crisp acidity and firm, chewy tannins confirm this is a wonderfully varietally expressive wine with a long complex finish. 95-97 points. Cabernet Sauvignon

2012 2011 2010 2009

As a result of our replanting programme and grafting of some older vines to Shiraz; this vintage was the last release of Estate grown Cabernet Sauvignon.

An exemplary aroma of cassis, crushed tobacco leaf, bay leaf, cedar and vanilla wafting around red to black fruits quintessential of Cabernet. Fine and silky mouth-feel combining with extract and tannins to create a long and savoury palate fuelled by cassis and cedar flavours that linger in the mouth. What a swan song, saving the best for last as the vines pull up stumps and head west. Fittingly leaving behind Giaconda's best ever Cabernet.

Notes of ripe black fruit and cedar, the nose is racy and has a classic Cabernet character without showing any green edges. The palate structure is very assertive whilst still being rich and long. This wine finishes with classic fine grained firm tannins which run right through the structure and will enable long term aging potential.

The nose has lovely perfume of liquorice, cassis and cedar. This wine has a lifted nose, followed by tobacco and green tea. Amphora Roussanne

Amphora Roussanne

2019

A one-off experimental 'natural' white wine fermented and aged in Amphora with full skin contact and minimal sulphur additions.

An exercise in 'natural' wine making where the accent is on doing little other than being vigilant. This Roussanne has been fermented and aged on skins for 9 months in Spanish Amphorae (Terracotta pots). A fascinating example of natural wine at its best, whereby all the varietal characters and freshness are retained. Displays a strong hue of green and gold - a complex dry white with an edge of the funky fruit characters; accented by notes of ginger, citrus peel, honeysuckle and white flowers. The palate is incredibly textural and framed by minimal acidity that is discretely tucked into the background. This finishes with a powerful end note of minerality, creating a perfect example of sophisticated dry white wine. Utterly unique!

"There’s ample richness in the mouth, with full viscous texture, but it all plays in a savoury space, with gentle acidity paired with skinsy tannin adding to the direction. This is pitched in a ‘natural’ wine vein, but it’s got a pretty classic feel for a skinsy white, fairly clean and bright, but with all the texture, grip and flavour complexity you’d expect."Young Gun of Wine

A bountiful offering of yellow peach, meal, hazelnut underpinned by citrus notes and a soupçon of funky characters sitting quietly over the top. Much the same occurs on the palate. 2015 Nantua Chardonnay

Golden yellow, flashed with green tinges: meal, lemon zest, yellow stone fruit, a smattering of grapefruit and vanilla nicely paired with grilled hazelnuts accompanied by the gentle overlay of matchstick: the palate rich, long and sprightly with plenty of zip from the deftly balanced spicy oak and acid profile. Devilishly delicious and complex; justifiably one of the most impressive Nantua releases to date.

Vibrant straw gold with flashes of green; an impressive aromatic of matchstick, hazelnut, white stone fruits, ginger, meal, oats, cashew and honey dew melon. A powerful punch of white peach and grapefruit pith slowly settles down to a long-tapered finish of mineral acids and spice infused peaches. Without question one of the most complete and complex Nantua chardonnay to grace the table. Utterly delicious, boisterous and vivacious.

One of the very best Nantuas to date, nudging the 2015 for top honours. There is a hint of struck matchstick and minerality on the nose of this well balanced and powerfully fruitful wine. White peach, nectarine, grapefruit and oatmeal  comes to the fore whilst the oak is discretely hidden. The palate is long and framed by hints of citrus pith that bring structure and texture to the finish.

2015 Nantua Chardonnay

Nantua Chardonnay is a blend of premium Giaconda Estate grown Chardonnay and fruit sourced from close neighbouring vineyards. This wine is made using similar methods to our Estate Chardonnay, with less time in barrel and less new oak. This results in a more fruit-forward style that is ready to drink immediately and does not require long term cellaring. This wine offers all the Giaconda hallmarks of complexity, palate texture and minerality.

Straw yellow. Aromas of meal and white peach with a spark of matchstick. Mineral notes follow clearly expressing the granite terroir. The palate is tight yet rich with white peach, cinnamon and lemon curd adding a zest to the fruit finish. A powerful and poised vintage: spicy, full and creamy in texture with a satisfying and elegant palate. An echo of the Estate wine with a small component of Roussanne. This wine will drink well young. Perfectly balanced and with enough attitude to make this one the finest Nantua releases to date.

Bright in colour; straw gold tinged with green Peach and nectarine fruit coming to the fore, then complex lees-derived characters which mingle with ginger and orange zest aromatics. White stone fruits fill the palate in a controlled manner – textural roundness precisely framed by oak and acid. Fittingly, the flourish in the tail delivers a timely reminder of the mineral qualities from granite soils, with a dry and fine savoury finish.

A small component of Roussanne gives this wine an additional fruit lift. The palate is typically complex and mineral - a real junior Giaconda Chardonnay. A little more forward than the Estate Chardonnay maybe, but long and very flavoursome. Rick has changed the basis of this wine somewhat; it now contains a large amount of Giaconda Estate grown fruit, with some from two close neighbours and less Roussanne. This makes it more of an entry level Giaconda Chardonnay but still maintains the general characteristics of the former Nantua. This wine has the capability to age for some years.

Nantua Chardonnay is a blend of Chardonnay and Roussanne (7%) fruit sourced from a neighbouring Beechworth vineyard grown on granite soils. This wine is made using similar methods to our Estate Vineyard Chardonnay, with less time in barrel and less new oak. This results in a more fruit forward style.

This seductive wine has a superb mineral quality balanced by lush underlying fruit. The nose is similar to the Estate Chardonnay, with oatmeal, hazelnuts, matchstick and lingering minerality on the palate. Chardonnay dominates but the Roussanne adds a rich complementary component - a complex nose will enable the wine to pair with a wide range of foods, from oysters to pork belly. The palate is evidently spicy at this stage and will flesh out beautifully once the fruit flourishes. Savoury characters, minerality and fruit all play a part and will soon combine to give wonderful depth and complexity. The palate is quite rich but drawn out by fine acidity and a touch of phenolic, which also helps to make the wine a great partner with a wide range of foods.

Nantua Roussanne

2022 2021

A powerful illumination of gold-flecked green which lights up the stemware. Stone fruits, honeysuckle, vanilla bean and a waft of lime blossom explodes from the glass. The palate is richly layered with gobs of ripe stone fruits, deftly balanced by acidity which keeps the rollicking fruit that powers this wine in check. Phenolics are judged to perfection - just enough to corset the fruit and maintain focus and length on the palate. Here is power with restraint. Destined for a long life given the quality of fruit and the impeccable structural components enveloping this glorious expression of Roussanne.

A comforting tone of magenta and black; violets, crushed leaf, cedar and polished leather with some crunchy red berry fruit. As it opens-up, a delicious core of bright red fruits corseted by cedary tannins which pulsate along the palate. Nicely rounded, no bumps or edges. Perhaps this is what Rumpole meant when searching for a "cheeky railway claret." In this instance, there is a clear expression of the complexity of Cabernet Sauvignon: cedar, violets, dark red and black fruits, cold tea and a faint whiff of kiwi boot polish. This wine is encased in a fine mesh of elegant, savoury tannins boosted by the small addition of Nebbiolo. Perfectly ripe fruit provides the melody while the bass notes come from tannins that underpin this wine. A new age Cabernet that is immediately appealing though also built for the longer term.

Nantua Shiraz

2021 2019 2017 2014

A rather appealing bouquet of baked beets, briary notes and roasted meat pan juices coupled with red to black cherries.  It's sumptuous and rounded on the palate with a rolling combination of red fruits, spicy oak infusions underpinned by a tremendous layer of fine, savoury tannins. It certainly needs decanting to help open-up the bouquet, whilst also allowing the fruit to build up and work with the structural elements of the wine. Hours later, a darker brooding fruit element develops, accompanied by the subtle rise of a “sous bois” note. An absolute beauty that will be at its best in a few years.

A cool ripening season has delivered delicately spiced shiraz. This wine has been made from select parcels of fruit sourced from the exceptional Warner Vineyard. The 2021 is medium-bodied and already approachable as a young wine.
"Medium-deep red with a good tint of purple and a sweetly ripe, almost slightly jammy aroma with lots of Rhône-ish spices adding to the lifted perfume. Cloves, pepper, mace and other spices, flowing through a long and elegant palate. More bunchy the longer it was in the glass, and very detailed. A very stylish shiraz indeed, drinking superbly already."Huon Hooke

2019 Nantua Shiraz

Nantua Pinot Noir

Nantua Pinot Noir

2022 2016

An earthy, red fruit laden pinot noir that looks more Burgundian than Australian, given its savoury edge and tannin structure. The cooler year has delivered more in a red-fruited spectrum, pretty and dainty but nonetheless with a traditional spine of tannin. This wine will reach maturity earlier and we expect it will develop forest floor characters (the tell-tale signs are there) adding another dimension. A most enjoyable savoury wine, where all facets; fruit, tannin, acid and oak are all pulling in unison. This wine has a satisfying sense of harmony and controlled richness.

"100% Estate grown. This wine encapsulates the typical characters of earthiness and vibrant perfume from a cooler vintage. The result is a more delicate wine when contrasted to our usual Estate Vineyard release."Rick Kinzbrunner, Winemaker

Nantua Pinot Noir

2022 2016

An earthy wine with elegant red cherry fruit. Rich yet delicate, with finely crafted oak tannins backing a vibrant fruit focus. The palate is moreish and silky, supported by juicy fruit and bright acidity sitting in the background.
